Itinerary and Important Information:

  1. Please be on time! We cannot wait for late arrivals.

  2. Don’t just type “Getty” into your GPS. There are two. This is the one just off the 405 in Brentwood, NOT the one on PCH in Malibu.

  3. Note: PPA Members will receive a Service Merit for attending!

  4. 9:30 am - Arrival: Park (parking opens at 9:30am), Take the tram up to the arrival plaza. Meet the group and gather on the plaza just beyond where we disembark. The time from entering the parking garage driveway to disembarking the tram at the Arrival Plaza may take 15 minutes.

  5. 10:00 am – Dept of Photographs Study Room. We will move as a group to the reception area (Central Security Station) for check-in and escort to the Study Room.

  6. Before we start viewing the individual images, John Grusd will give a brief contextual introduction to what we will be viewing. (i.e. “The World of Landscape Photography”)

  7. In the Study Room, we will not only view but also discuss each image on display. We will talk about historical context and the photographers themselves. We will talk about the history of Landscape Photography, how it was (and is) influenced by the times, how it has evolved as an art form, and where it seems to be going now.

  8. To do this, we start the day in the Department of Photography’s Study Room, viewing and discussing images that illustrate that history and genre. (In a follow-up email after the event, you will receive an emailed list (with thumbnails) of the images we viewed.)

  9. 12:00 pm (immediately after the Study Room) – Lunch in the Getty cafeteria.

  10. After lunch – We will visit Getty Museum galleries that contain landscape art of the same period to underscore how the arts influenced each other, photography following painting but also painting taking cues from photography. This is all about context!

  11. After that, we will visit the current Photography Exhibition.

  12. And after that, Everyone is free to roam around on their own, visit more galleries, the gardens, and especially to photograph the Center’s architecture, views, and grounds.

  13. Follow up on Image Review a couple of weeks after the event. (Optional but encouraged.)

  14. The number of attendees is limited by the Getty.

  15. For those parking, the Getty will provide a voucher (Free parking!), but for only 14 cars. Carpool!

  16. Rules for the Study Room

    1. No food, liquids, or chewing gum

    2. No ink pens or markers (pencils are OK)

    3. Any coats, purses, backpacks, camera, etc. will need to be left in the office area outside the Study Room. (This is not a public area. The items left there are safe.)

  17. Rules for the Getty Center:

    1. No tripods/monopods

    2. No camera backpacks in the museum. They have a bag check room.

  18. Do bring a camera! Pack light with a single medium zoom or wide angle zoom lens and use it hand-held. There is plenty to photograph!
