Workshop: Getty Center Department of Photographs Study Room

About the Course

This is a rare chance to see historic photographs, up close and personal, and without frames or glass between you and the images. The Study Room is a private setting where we view a collection of photographs curated especially for us from the vast Getty archives.

At this visit, John Grusd will lead a discussion on the Landscape Photography genre, its history (this is a museum, after all), alternative interpretations of landscape, and where the art form is heading. There will be famous photos that you recognize and images that will surprise and (hopefully) inspire you.

Following the viewing in the Study Room, we will have lunch together at the Café before exploring a few of the museum’s pavilions and exhibitions. And after that, we will explore and photograph the beautiful architecture and grounds, so bring your cameras.

The fine print:

  • The day includes a morning (10 am) session in the Dept of Photographs Study Room and an afternoon of visiting selected works at the museum, followed by photographing the architecture and its grounds.

  • The size of the group is limited (under 20 people), so signing up is on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be a Wait List after we reach the attendance limit.

  • There is no entrance fee to the Getty Center, but there is a parking fee. However, the Getty will give vouchers for parking for 15 vehicles. We encourage attendees to carpool.

  • PPA members will receive a workshop service merit for attending. Make sure we have your PPA membership number.

  • We buy our own lunches.

  • When we get closer to the date of the event, we will send detailed info regarding any museum rules and restrictions, as well as where and at what time we will meet.

Workshop Fee:

  • PPC / PPA Members - $30.00

  • Members - $20.00  (Use Coupon Code: MEMBERS10)
